Coldplay and Deadlifting

It's been a fun week with Joel Marion in town. On Monday we went to the Coldplay show here in Denver.

This was my favorite part.


Last night we had a great dinner with Chef Gui Alinat, who is also in town to film some new cooking courses.

I've had the last two days off from the gym and didn't get a lot of sleep earlier this week, but after a good night of rest I did this workout today:

1A) Deadlift
1B) Mobility

2A) Front Squat
2B) Hang Clean

Crazy Monday Motivation

TT Trainer Catherine Gordon is Famous!

Training in Toronto and Real Media for the Perfect Day

Faced with the dilemma of squatting with a Smith Machine or waiting until Sunday morning to squat (and thus messing up my weekly schedule), I took the easy way out.


The Smith Machine got the pass, and I did an upper body Meathead workout instead. Fortunately, I tied a personal best for chest presses, and had a good session for the upper back. Today I head home from Toronto, so I'll slip into the YMCA tomorrow morning for a squat workout before driving back to the Toronto Airport for my late flight to Denver.


The Saturday morning session went like this:


1a) DB Chest Press - 70x16

1b) Cable Row


2a) Military Press

2b) Bodyweight Row


3a) Machine Row

3b) Shrug

Good times, even though it was a bit of a cop-out.

Hair Transformation and Deadlifting in Denver

Sunday Crush

Well I was feeling pretty crushed on Sunday morning after my third workout back here in Denver.


I felt strong during the workout, so the time out of the gym seemed to have helped.


It's also led to a little more soreness than usual, but I'll take that trade-off.


Sunday AM session went like this...

Part of my fatigue comes from my inability to sleep well in Denver over the last few nights.


I'm not sure if it's the altitude or something in my apartment, but I'm doing everything right to get to sleep each night. No caffeine for over 12 hours before bed... no electronics for 90 minutes before bed... no heavy meals for hours before bed... no alcohol at all.


Fortunately Sunday night was better.


Today was a yoga circuit for recovery, and then I had a lot of early morning interviews to promote The Perfect Day Formula.

After a couple of hours of writing, organizing, connecting, and coaching, it was time to hit the gym for Measured Meathead performance.

Probably a little weaker due to travel, lack of sleep during the trip, time zone shifts, bad night's sleep in Denver, etc.

But not bad, not bad at all.

So after a very smooth day of traveling from Rio to Atlanta to Denver, I was able to get back in the gym on Friday afternoon. I slept 7.5 hours on the flight from Brazil to America, so I was well rested.

Brazil Finals

Today is our last day in Brazil. We have lunch, then a few low-key hours before heading to the airport for an overnight flight back to America.

The basketball game was interesting... there were many ticket problems, and the Argentinian fans were chaotic. But Joel got to sit beside Floyd Mayweather, which was cool. However, when one of my friends asked Zac Efron for a picture, he brushed them off. LOL.

Today's workout will be some pullups and rowing at the local gym. I'm just finishing breakfast now and will head over soon. My legs are a little sore, as planned, from yesterday's bodyweight session.

Easy Days and Hard Mornings in Brazil

Yesterday was a low-key day. I actually did a lot of work because we have some big ETR projects on the go.

Around mid-afternoon we went down to Ipanema beach to visit USA House and the insanely overpriced USA Olympic Store.
Here is last night's sunset view at Ipanema beach with my local Brazilian tour guides, Bruno and Tai.


Then we went to the famous Copacabana Palace Hotel. It might be the nicest hotel I've ever visited. I'd like to stay there one day. We had a great fancy dinner with the Marion family and called it an early night.

Today is also a relaxing-work day, and then tonight it's our final Olympic event, the USA men's quarterfinal basketball game. Will there be an upset?

Kickstarting my morning, though, of course, was a bodyweight workout:

1) Pushups
2) Lunges
3) Iron Cross
4) Bodyweight Squats

Total of 501 reps (Iron Cross not included in the count)

I did a max pushup set of 55 to start to the workout. Good to see my numbers didn't drop off despite the months I spent on a 4-day per week barbell and heavy lifting program.

Relax, let go, and allow those who can help you to help you. You don’t always need to go it on your own. You don’t need be a hero, a martyr, or sacrificial lamb. It’s okay to show a weakness, to address it, to fix it. It’s okay to let someone put bandages on your wounds. The world is not full of sharks out for your blood. Today is going to be a relaxing day in Rio. We don't have any events planned, and after yesterday's snoozefest (diving), I'm going to take the chance to catch up on some work in anticipation of a big September.

I finally drank out of a plastic water bottle again... 350 days after starting this transformation.

I made it through multiple trips around America, and even a 3-week journey to Europe this summer, but I wasn't able to overcome the travel hassles to Brazil this week.

But when I return to North America, it's back to boxed water.

We often go through long periods of doing the work with minimal results...and then we experience the WHOOOOOSH effect when a big breakthrough occurs leading to incredible results in a short amount of time. But this happens when you do the work, when you fight the resistance, and when you persist.

Rio Update and Bodyweight Circuit

Last night was interesting.

We were very lucky to see this man in action last night... he had such incredible confidence in his qualifying heat, his warm-ups, and even down to the last second before the gun went off in the final.


There was NO doubt in his mind.


He was a superman amongst men.


Today we're off to diving. Yesterday we also did a great hike. Wednesday night is basketball quarterfinals. And then we get home on Friday morning.

The hike was tough, but short, and it seemed to have sped my recovery from Saturday's tough bodyweight leg circuit.

Today I did a bodyweight session today in my hotel room.

- 300 squats
- 225 pushups
- 75 split squats

Good times. About 25 minutes, not including warm-ups.

Tennis and Training in Rio

Joel and I stumbled into an odd gym on Thursday morning. It had normal equipment, maybe a little old, but it was packed into a tiny space. Imagine having gym equipment in the rooms of your house, all packed close together.

That's kind of what it was. We did a variety of things.

Gymnastics on Thursday was fantastic. Tennis on Friday was hilarious. The Brazilians don't care much for tennis etiquette. The official match "shusher" was exasperated, repeatedly asking for "Silencio".

The Brazilians were singing and drinking and whooping and hollering because they had a local guy in a match against Nadal. Nadal played the villain and came back to win after getting crushed in the first set.

Brazilian tennis fans + beer + Rafa Nadal comeback = very entertaining afternoon at the Olympics

Is the life you're living worth what you are giving up to have it? You are not going to be a billionaire…so…how will you measure your life? How much money do you need? Swimming and Pushing in Rio

Last night we had a chance to see Phelps, Lochte, Ledecky, and rising star Penny Oleksiak at Rio 2016.


My favorite part was watching 40 swimmers warmup in the pool at the same time... and somehow avoid getting kicked in the face, despite there being 6 to a lane at some points.

BTW, the swimming didn't start till 10pm local time... and some races finished just before midnight. Not my preferred training schedule, that's sure!

But the swimmers motivated me to push hard today in a bodyweight hotel room workout here in Brazil.

Craig vs Lunges

Back in 2007 I created a very controversial video about a common exercise that you are doing WRONG.

Lunges

The lunge is an excellent exercise for lower body strengthening, coordination, and balance. Though it may appear to be an isolated lower body exercise, it requires the participation of the entire body to be performed properly.

Deadlift and Travel Day

Lots of prepping and errands to do today. Now it's time to bust out of here.

Managed to do a Deadlift session before I left town...

1A) Deadlift
1B) Box Jump

2A) Hang Clean
2B) Leg Curl

Now off to Toronto.

Will do a hotel gym workout of incline dumbbell press, split squat, rear delt raise, and torso training at 6am tomorrow before heading to the airport.

Then it's two weeks of here, there, and everywhere, before getting back to Toronto on August 25th.

And all this while taking care of bizneth.

Gold Medal Squats

Dang, I haven't been this excited about a trip since I went to Italy several years ago. Next Tuesday I head to Rio for the Olympics. Every day Joel Marion is sending me texts and pumping me up about about Brazil.

Joel's taking about 12 members of his family and we're going to see...
- Men's tennis
- Swimming final
- USA Men's B-ball Quarterfinal
- And... the 100 meter finals

Plus we'll do the Sugarloaf Mountain hike to see the Christ the Redeemer statue (this might be the highlight for me), and I'll be posting lots of pics and lessons along the way.

So today was my last squat workout before the trip, and I'll still get one more deadlift session in next Monday morning. This was a good one.

Dang that Deadlift

Darn, it was a disappointing deadlift day in the gym.

Something was sore in my left shoulder. I'm guessing, but I think it's teres major or long head triceps origin on the scap.

So I had to shut it down.

And that's a message that works well in all

Its OK to say NO. Make the right decisions for you. Doing more doesn't always mean doing better. Doing better doesn’t always mean doing more

Still managed a decent total body workout.

1A) Deadlift - shut down 1/2 way through 3rd set
1B) Did 1 set of shrugs to failure to finish

2A) BB Incline Press
2B) Hang Clean

3A) Leg Curl
3B) BB Row

Did lots of stretching and some foam rolling at the end. There are a few things that seem to speed my recovery, and so I used everything in my bag of tricks. I'll be off from upper body for a few days, and hope to get one more good deadlift session in before heading to Rio next Tuesday.

Today's Kickbutt Mindset Tip:
Relax, let go, and allow those who can help you to help you. You don’t need be a hero, a martyr, or sacrificial lamb. You don’t always need to go it on your own. It’s okay to show a weakness, to address it, to fix it. It’s okay to wear bandages on your wounds. Your world is not full of sharks out for blood. Instead, you are surrounded by people that care and want to help you as much as you want to help others. So let them.

Benching Back in the City of Ballantyne

Ah yes, good to be home.


Alas, Saturday was another one of those days at the airport.


And I knew it was starting off too good to be true.


The drive from downtown Denver to the airport was only 25 minutes. It's normally closer to 40.


I was through security in minutes, and even got to go through an old school metal detector, not a scatter scanner.


We boarded on time and were out on the runway when...


...that dreaded announcement came.


"Ladies and gentlemen, we need to go back to the jet bridge and have maintenance come on board."


Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.


Not the first time this has happened to me...surely won't be the last.


And so we deplaned.


I think that's the third time I've had to deplane in my "travel career".


Fortunately, the flight eventually was able to go, and we were just 3 hours late.


And after a 90-minute drive in my rental car, I was back at the farm, safe and sound.


Grateful, too.


I mean really, I traveled thousands of miles in just hours.


While watching Zootopia.


(Or at least part of it, I wasn't that entertained so I didn't finish it.)


What a time to be alive!


So let's get to the health and training portion of this update...


I didn't sleep as well as expected last night, but still managed 7 hours.


I'm almost over my jetlag.


Sunday morning I hit the local YMCA. It was good to be back and under the bar.


Workout went like this:


1a) Bench - worked up to 195x7

1b) Pullups


2a) DB Low-Incline Press

2b) Bodyweight Row


Tomorrow is a day off and then I'm back in for deadlifts on Tuesday.


After the workout I hung in the downtown area of my little city. It was full of tourists in town to stroll down by the river and attend the local Shakespearean Festival. There was a busload of Japanese tourists. And it was funny to see them all go to Subway for lunch.


Humans sure are a creature of habit... almost always opting for safety instead of adventure.


I've done it too...once went to a TGIF's while in Norway.


Today's Kickbutt Mindset Tip:

Failure isn't bad. Failure isn't final. If there is one thing I know after having observed this crazy world for 41 years, it's that you can SURVIVE almost anything and come back better and stronger than ever before. Don’t let the fear of failure stop you from achieving the success you deserve. Failure only hurts when you’ve quit on something important to you. So don’t. Keep at it. The more you move in the right direction towards success, the better you’ll feel. Every day you must work on making new positive habits second nature automatic. Make little bets and take big steps forward every day. Stay strong. Never quit. You can do it.
